Surfing Dogs and Soap Stars

Cameron Mathinson and John Weisbarth

This past weekend I emceed the 7th annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition…you read that right, surfing dogs. It’s actually the 4th time I’ve had the pleasure of working this event and I have to say, it keeps getting bigger and bigger. We had more then 50 dogs competing, almost 2,000 spectators on the beach and lots and lots of media coverage.

Aside from the standard local morning show crew and more bloggers then you could throw a stick at, we had some serious national coverage as well. Topping the list were the Travel Channel and Good Morning America, the later of which sent Cameron Mathinson to try his luck in the tandem surfing category. For those that aren’t familiar with Cameron he was on the Soap Opera “All My Children” and the 5th season of “Dancing with the Stars”. His other claim to fame is posing in this picture with me.

I have to say it’s pretty easy to understand why Cameron has had the success he has. While he is clearly not hard on the eyes, he is also a really cool guy. Very unassuming and very down to earth. Happy to say he ended up getting second place in his division with the help of Ricochet the dog.

Not bad for a guy from Canada who learned to surf the day before.
